French (La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc)
1928 · Directed by Carl T. Dreyer · 81 min
France, 1431. A young peasant woman who says she hears the voice of God is questioned by a panel of church judges who want her to deny it. Told almost entirely through faces, the film turns a single trial into an intense, intimate ordeal.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining late-silent art film and the work that made Carl Dreyer an international name. It stands as the clearest argument that cinema could express inner experience through the human face alone.
Watch with intention
Treat every face as a landscape: watch what each one reveals about power, doubt and belief, and how the camera chooses where to look.
