Antonin Artaud (1896–1948) was a French poet, playwright, theatre director and actor. He is best known for his radical theory of the "Theatre of Cruelty," which shaped modern avant-garde theatre. In film, he played supporting roles in several French silent and early sound productions, including Dreyer's Joan of Arc.
