Drama · War
Czech (Obchod na korze)
1965 · Directed by Ján Kadár & Elmar Klos · 128 min
In a small Slovak town during the Second World War, a mild, easily led carpenter is handed control of a button shop owned by an elderly widow who barely understands what is going on. A human comedy of small-town manners that gradually grows heavier.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the Czechoslovak New Wave era and an early, influential example of treating the Holocaust through tragicomedy and everyday complicity rather than spectacle.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of a decent, weak man and how a small town makes cowardice feel normal.
