Hollywood, 1927: a silent-film idol and his screen partner face a new technology that could end their careers, just as the star meets an aspiring young performer who unsettles his certainties. A bright Technicolor comedy that treats the movie business as a source of both satire and song.
Why it matters in cinema history
The peak of the integrated MGM musical produced by Arthur Freed's unit, and a rare Hollywood film that looks back at its own industry's history with comic knowledge rather than nostalgia alone.
