Drama · Western
Italian (C'era una volta il West)
1968 · Directed by Sergio Leone · 166 min
The railroad is pushing west across the Arizona desert, and several people want the same patch of land for their own reasons. A woman arrives in a frontier town to start again, and a handful of hard men circle around her. Slow, stylised and operatic in tone.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the Spaghetti Western that also works as an elegy for the American western itself, made by an Italian director who had learned the genre from Hollywood and then reshaped it.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an opera without arias: character is carried by faces, music and long silences rather than by speech.
