Meaning, unpacked
Central idea
The film can be read as a story about isolation and desire in a place that has hollowed people out. It asks whether two lonely people, one human and one monster, can make a connection in a world of exploitation, and who really counts as the predator.
Its lasting influence
It helped open space for stylised, auteur-driven horror and gave visibility to Iranian-diaspora filmmakers in American independent film. Amirpour went on to make further genre-bending films, and the film is often cited alongside other quiet, art-house vampire films.
The rest, in short
The central idea is isolation. Bad City has been hollowed out by drugs, debt and exploitation, and almost everyone in it is alone. So can two lonely people, one human and one monster, connect here? And who is the real predator?
She hunts men who harm others, which turns the night street's usual gaze upside down. The woman walking alone is not the victim. But is she a protector, or just another violent force? Long silences let glances and music do the talking.

After she kills a man who threatened him, Arash sees what she is. He chooses her anyway. The two leave Bad City in his car, with the cat between them, heading toward a future the film doesn't show.
The last image
The car holds the vampire, Arash and the cat, with the road ahead and no destination in sight.
Two readings
What it says
The film is about whether two isolated people can reach each other, so it ends on the choice, not the consequences. Arash isn't scared of her, and the ending lets that stand as an act of trust.
