Meaning, unpacked
Central idea
The film can be read as a story about the hunger to be seen and wanted, and the resentment felt by those who feel that hunger can no longer be met. Youth and age mirror each other, and cinema is the means by which both try to be desired.
What it means
X is about the hunger to be seen and wanted, and the resentment of people who feel that hunger can no longer be met. A young crew sets out to shoot an adult film at a Texas farm in 1979, and their elderly hosts, Pearl and Howard, turn on them. Youth and age mirror each other here, and cinema is the tool both sides use to try to be desired.
That is why the old couple are not just monsters. The film treats their longing as real and painful, and their envy of the young is the engine of the horror. Think of the moment the elderly woman approaches Maxine: tender, needy and deeply unsettling all at once. Desire does not fade with age. Maxine has her own hunger, too. Her mantra is that she deserves more than she was given, and the film asks what that ambition costs and who it consumes. Her final escape and the closing image link her to what she has fled, a quiet reminder that wanting more can be inherited.
Why it mattered
When X premiered at South by Southwest in March 2022, it showed how a genre film could study its ancestors while telling its own story. Ti West rebuilds the look, pacing and attitude of late-1970s American horror with modern precision. It is not a remake of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It borrows setting, structure and atmosphere as homage, and also draws on Psycho's farmhouse-and-outbuilding layout and on the era's adult film boom.
Its patience was part of what felt fresh. The first act builds characters and a sense of place, so when the film shifts into a classic slasher pattern, the killings arrive with weight rather than as a checklist. It also asks you to think about looking. A film is being made inside the film, and the characters, the hosts and you are all watchers. It sits in a wave of art-house-minded horror that revisits the grindhouse and slasher era as both tribute and critique.

Create your free spaceX launched a trilogy, continued in Pearl (2022) and MaXXXine (2024), each in a different genre style. It also strengthened the appeal of period-pastiche horror, where a decade's film language is recreated as both homage and commentary. Mia Goth's double role helped establish her as a leading horror performer, often called a modern scream queen. The film also prompted conversation about how horror treats older people's sexuality, and about resentment between generations.
Critics praised its craft, its performances and its mix of homage and fresh ideas, and horror fans responded warmly. Some reviewers felt its themes were less developed than its style. It did well for a modestly budgeted horror film, released by A24. Its standing has grown as the trilogy has. It now looks less like a standalone slasher and more like the first chapter of a larger study of ambition, fame and ageing, and it is often cited as a high point of 2020s genre filmmaking.
What happens
Maxine kills Pearl and Howard and escapes in Howard's truck. As she drives off, you see that Mia Goth also played the old woman Pearl, which ties the survivor to the killer.
The last image
Maxine drives away from the farm, and the film leaves you with the link between her and the old woman she has just escaped.
What it says
The doubling says that Maxine's hunger to be a star and Pearl's lost hopes grow from the same place. The ending frames wanting more as something that can be inherited, and it sets up the prequel, Pearl.

See what influenced it
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
The clearest ancestor of X. Seeing it shows what West borrows and what he changes, especially in tone and in how he treats his victims.

Compare another approach
Boogie Nights (1997)
Another film about making adult cinema in the 1970s, though a drama rather than horror. It shows how the same industry can be seen through ambition and community.

See what influenced it
Psycho (1960)
The model for a house that hides a disturbing secret, and for horror that plays with the gaze and with the audience's expectations.

Explore the era or movement
Halloween (1978)
A near-contemporary of X's setting, it shows the slasher formula taking shape as West's film deliberately approaches and then breaks from it.

Hereditary (2018)
A modern A24 horror film that shares X's slow build and its interest in family and inherited fear, with a very different tone.
