Italian (Due soldi di speranza)
1952 · Directed by Renato Castellani · 93 min
In a poor village in the shadow of Vesuvius, a teenage girl sets her heart on a jobless young man and refuses to be talked out of it. Light, funny and observant, the film follows her stubborn campaign against poverty, family pressure and village gossip.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the lighter side of postwar Italian cinema, often placed between the hardship dramas of neorealism and the satirical comedies that followed in the 1950s and 1960s.
Watch with intention
Watch it as neorealism in a comic key: a love story where every joke is also about money, work and who gets to decide.
