A farm girl from Kansas is swept far from home and told that the only person who can help her is a wizard in a distant city. She sets off down a yellow road, gathering companions and enemies. Tone: sincere, songful, and gently frightening.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the studio-era musical and of colour fantasy, released in the same remarkable Hollywood year as Gone with the Wind and Stagecoach. Its television screenings later made it one of the most widely shared films ever.
