German (Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse)
1933 · Directed by Fritz Lang · 122 min
Berlin, 1932. A police inspector with a taste for the comic and the methodical investigates a wave of strange, apparently unconnected crimes. The trail leads towards a name most thought belonged to the past: Dr. Mabuse, a once-feared criminal now confined to a psychiatric clinic.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late peak of Weimar cinema, completed as that era ended, and a key bridge between Lang's silent spectacle and the sound thrillers that followed.
Watch with intention
Watch this as a thriller built from sound and space, where what is heard or left unsaid matters as much as what is shown.
