Texas, 1868. Ethan Edwards, a Confederate veteran, turns up at his brother's remote homestead after years away. When a Comanche raid upends the family, he and his adopted nephew Martin set out on a journey that stretches across seasons and landscapes. A Western of vast scenery, rough humour and uneasy tone.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late Classical Western, it takes the genre's conventions at their most confident and quietly tests them, setting up the revisionist Westerns of the following decades.
Watch with intention
Treat the film as a portrait of one man, and ask how much it tells you about Ethan through what the camera shows rather than what anyone says.
