German (Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari)
1920 · Directed by Robert Wiene · 77 min
A mysterious showman and his sleepwalking attraction arrive at a fair in a small German town, and a young man is drawn into the unease that follows. Told through painted, distorted sets, it plays like a nightmare put on film.
Why it matters in cinema history
A cornerstone of Weimar-era cinema that showed film could be built like a painting or stage design, and an early proof that horror could be a matter of visual style.

Treat the design as the main storyteller: let the angles, painted shadows and stylised movement shape your mood before the plot does.
