A farm boy on a desert planet, a smuggler, a princess and two bickering robots are pulled into a rebellion against a galactic empire. George Lucas builds a fairy tale from serial adventure, samurai film and western, told at full speed and with a worn, lived-in look.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the post-1970s Hollywood, it turned the youthful, personal energy of the New Hollywood generation toward popular adventure and set the template for the blockbuster era that followed.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a modern fairy tale built from older movies, and notice how economically every shot tells you who and where you are.
