Born 14 May 1944 · Modesto, California, USA

George Lucas is an American filmmaker who created Star Wars and, with Steven Spielberg, the Indiana Jones franchise. He founded Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic, and sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012. His work reshaped blockbuster filmmaking, special effects and film merchandising.

Key films

His debut feature, a dystopian sci-fi film expanded from his USC student short; critically admired but a commercial failure.

  • American Graffiti (1973)

Nostalgic coming-of-age hit based on his Modesto youth; earned five Oscar nominations including Best Picture.

  • Star Wars (1977)

Space-opera landmark that became a record-breaking hit, won six Oscars and launched a cultural phenomenon.

  • Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

His return to directing and the start of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

  • Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Concluded the prequel trilogy, completing Anakin Skywalker's story and bridging to the original films.
