A psychologist, Kris Kelvin, is sent to a research station orbiting the distant ocean-planet Solaris, where the crew has stopped answering clearly and scientists have long failed to understand the world beneath them. Slow, hushed and serious, this is science fiction as a contemplative inquiry rather than an adventure.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1970s art-house science fiction and a high point of Soviet auteur cinema, which proved that the genre could carry the same moral and spiritual weight as literary drama.
Watch with intention
Watch it less as a story about a strange planet and more as a study of one man's state of mind.
