Drama
Italian (Sciuscià)
1946 · Directed by Vittorio De Sica · 91 min
In Rome just after the war, two teenage shoeshine boys scrape together money for the thing they love most: a horse. Vittorio De Sica follows their friendship through the streets of a ruined city, with warmth, close attention and no sentimental shortcuts.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining early work of neorealism, it helped establish the movement's look and ethics: real locations, unknown faces, and ordinary people as the subject of serious drama. It was also the first foreign-language film honoured by the Academy.
Watch with intention
Watch how postwar Rome, its poverty and improvised economy, shapes what two boys can dream of and what they will risk for it.
