What happens
In the desert, Doe reveals he envied Mills's life and has killed Tracy; the box holds her head. Mills shoots him in rage, completing Doe's pattern: Doe is envy, Mills wrath.
The last line
Ernest Hemingway once wrote, 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part.
What it says
Doe wins by making Mills a sin, yet Somerset's choice to stay answers him. The film refuses a rescue but does not give up on the world: the ending asks whether you retreat from evil or stay and fight.
