1995 · Directed by David Fincher · 127 min
In a rain-soaked, unnamed American city, a veteran detective a week from retirement is paired with a hot-tempered newcomer. A series of murders, each staged around the idea of a deadly sin, pulls them into an investigation neither is ready for. Grim, patient and meticulously controlled.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining thriller of the mid-1990s, it fused film noir mood with the serial-killer procedural and reshaped how Hollywood made dark crime stories for years afterwards.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about two ways of looking: one detective who reads the evidence patiently, and one who wants to act.
