Belgian
1999 · Directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne · 95 min
Rosetta is a teenager living in a caravan park in industrial Belgium, determined to hold down a proper job and be, in her own words, normal. The film stays close to her for ninety-five minutes, with no commentary and almost no pause.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late-1990s revival of social realism in Europe, it carried the neorealist and documentary-influenced tradition into a new, stripped-down, physically immediate style.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as a study of one body in motion, where the camera's position and the lack of music do the work that a score would normally do.
