The Rebellion regroups after its worst defeat, and Luke Skywalker and his friends begin a risky rescue mission on a desert world ruled by a crime lord. Meanwhile the Empire is building a weapon more fearsome than the last. This is the third film of the original Star Wars trilogy: a spectacle-driven space adventure with fairy-tale clarity.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late-1970s and early-1980s blockbuster era, and the last of the trilogy that made merchandising, sequels and effects-led spectacle central to Hollywood strategy.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a fairy tale told with industrial craft: every puppet, model and costume was physically built and photographed.
