1953 · Directed by Samuel Fuller · 80 min
A New York pickpocket lifts a woman's wallet on a crowded subway and finds he has taken far more than cash. Police, federal agents and dangerous people all want what he now holds, and a hard city leaves him few safe places to go. Fast, brutal and unsentimental.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining late film noir and the clearest showcase of Samuel Fuller's blunt, kinetic B-movie style, which later European and American directors took as a model for personal genre filmmaking.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a crime film where the espionage is only an excuse and the real subject is how people on the margins survive.
