1975 · Directed by Miloš Forman · 135 min
A rule-breaking small-time convict is transferred from a prison work farm to a psychiatric ward for evaluation. There he meets a calm, tightly controlled routine and a group of patients who have long stopped pushing back. The film mixes comedy, warmth and mounting unease.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of New Hollywood's anti-authority streak, and a rare case of a character-driven, openly critical drama that was also a major commercial and awards success.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a contest of two kinds of power: a charismatic one that fills the room and a quiet one that rarely raises its voice.
