Charles Dickens's orphan tale becomes a big-screen British musical. A boy escapes a harsh workhouse and finds himself in the crowded streets of Victorian London, where kindness and danger sit side by side and almost every scene breaks into song.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late and very successful example of the lavish studio musical, made just as that format was fading and New Hollywood was about to replace it.
Watch with intention
Watch how the film keeps cheerful song and real social cruelty in the same frame, and notice which one wins each scene.
