Czech (Muži bez křídel)
1946 · Directed by František Čáp · 76 min
Under German occupation, workers and engineers in an aircraft factory are forced to build machines for the enemy's air force. This short, tense Czech drama follows the small, dangerous choices of ordinary people who decide they cannot simply go along.
Why it matters in cinema history
A founding work of Czechoslovak postwar cinema and part of the first wave of European films about occupation and resistance, made as the continent's film industries were rebuilding.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of how ordinary work becomes a battlefield, with the factory floor as the film's main stage.
