A young woman living in Taipei is forced into a criminal scheme that goes badly wrong, leaving her with an unexplained change in her body. Luc Besson's short, fast thriller mixes gangster action with a speculative science idea, and it plays like a pulp fable more than a realistic drama.
Why it matters in cinema history
A characteristic late work of Besson's French-produced, internationally aimed action cinema, and a useful example of how mainstream science fiction in the 2010s borrowed popular science to drive a thriller.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a fable told in the language of a thriller, where bold ideas matter more than scientific realism.
