Éric Serra

Born 9 September 1959 · Saint-Mandé, Val-de-Marne, France

Éric Serra is a French composer and musician best known for his long partnership with director Luc Besson. His electronic-leaning, atmospheric scores helped define the sound of French cinéma du look in the 1980s and 1990s. He also scored the James Bond film GoldenEye, a controversial departure from series tradition.

Key films

  • The Last Battle (1983)

His first feature score, launching his collaboration with Luc Besson.

  • The Big Blue (1988)

Its atmospheric score became one of his signature works and won him a César.

  • Léon: The Professional (1994)

A moody, widely recognised Besson score from one of his best-loved thrillers.

  • GoldenEye (1995)

His modern, synth-driven take on a Bond score divided critics and fans.

  • The Fifth Element (1997)

Inventive score for Besson's sci-fi spectacle, including the song credited to RXRA.
