Donnie Darko ending explained

What happens

Donnie sends the jet engine back through time, returns to the first night, and laughs in bed as it kills him. The 28 days become a erased timeline. Everyone else wakes up with a faint, unexplained sadness for a boy they never met.

After the morning montage, Gretchen, a stranger now, waves to Donnie's mother across the street as the neighborhood goes on without him.
