Virginia, October 1988. Donnie Darko is a bright, restless teenager who sleepwalks, sees a figure in a grotesque rabbit mask, and is told the world has very little time left. A suburban high-school drama, a dark comedy and a puzzle film run side by side.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key American indie of the turn of the millennium, and a clear example of a film whose reputation was made after release, by home video and word of mouth, not by the box office.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about how a gifted, troubled teenager sees his suburb, and ask which of the strange things on screen you can trust.
