A spoiled millionaire's son is thrown among the working fishermen of a Gloucester schooner on the Grand Banks. With no way home until the season ends, he has to learn a trade and a different measure of a person. A sea adventure that is also a story of growing up.
Why it matters in cinema history
A polished example of 1930s MGM literary adventure at its peak, and one of the key films in the Spencer Tracy and Victor Fleming careers. It gives a lasting template for the mentor-and-boy story.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an apprenticeship story: notice how every task teaches the boy something before anyone says so.
