Drama
Russian (Утомлённые солнцем)
1994 · Directed by Nikita Mikhalkov · 135 min
Russia, summer 1936. A celebrated Civil War commander relaxes at a country dacha with his young wife, small daughter and a crowd of relatives, until an old family friend turns up unannounced. A languid, sunlit period drama in which pleasure and unease share every frame.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of Russian cinema's first post-Soviet years, it brought the country's recent history to world audiences through the conventions of the European ensemble drama.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a country-house ensemble piece, where small gestures, glances and ordinary pleasures carry the weight of an entire historical moment.
