A single summer night in a small California town in 1962. Four recent high school friends cruise the main drag, chase girls, dodge trouble and wonder whether to leave town in the morning. Funny, wistful and driven by a wall-to-wall oldies soundtrack.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1970s New Hollywood and of the nostalgia genre, showing that a modest, personal, youth-oriented film could become a major hit and shape the decade's blockbusters.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about the last hours before choices have to be made, where the music and the cars are the setting for that pressure.
