Isao Takahata (1935–2018) was a Japanese animation director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, alongside Hayao Miyazaki. He never trained as an animator. Known for emotionally realistic, adult-oriented animated films, he helped establish anime as a medium for serious drama and everyday life.
