In an unnamed Mediterranean country, a charismatic opposition deputy arrives in a tense city to speak at a peace rally. A methodical, initially cautious magistrate is drawn into the events surrounding his visit. A political thriller with the pace of a crime story.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late-1960s political cinema, it showed that a mass-audience thriller could carry a direct political argument, and it fed the conspiracy cinema of the following decade.
