Japanese (君の名は。)
2016 · Directed by Makoto Shinkai · 106 min
A country girl in a mountain town and a boy in Tokyo begin to wake up in each other's bodies, without understanding why. Part comedy, part romance, part mystery, it is told with luminous, richly detailed animation and a pop-rock soundtrack.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of twenty-first-century Japanese animation, it showed that an original, non-Ghibli anime could rival the biggest names in audience reach and carry its director's style worldwide.
