Alice Sycamore is the one sensible member of a household where everyone does exactly as they please: making fireworks, dancing, writing plays, collecting snakes. When she falls for the son of a wealthy banker, two families with opposite ideas about how to live have to share a dinner table.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central example of Capra's populist comedies and of the late-1930s screwball tradition, and a model for translating a Broadway ensemble hit into polished studio cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch the two households as opposing systems of behavior, and notice how Capra stages each one differently.
