Italian (Ieri, oggi, domani)
1963 · Directed by Vittorio De Sica · 119 min
Three short comic stories, set in Naples, Milan and Rome, each built around a woman who knows exactly what she wants and how to get it. Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni play the central couple in all three, in warm, sharp, very Italian comedy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A prime example of the Italian episode film and of commedia all'italiana's international success, showing how the neorealist generation turned its eye for social detail towards glossy, star-driven comedy.
Watch with intention
Watch how each episode changes the city, the class and the rules of the game, while the two stars keep reinventing themselves.
