Drama
Turkish (Kış Uykusu)
2014 · Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan · 196 min
A retired actor who runs a hotel in the stone landscape of Central Anatolia lives with his much younger wife and his recently divorced sister. As snow closes in, the three of them circle one another in long, searching conversations. It is a patient, talky chamber drama about pride, privilege and what people say to avoid saying the truth.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of twenty-first-century slow, dialogue-driven art cinema, and a late high point of the European festival tradition of the psychological chamber piece.
Watch with intention
Treat each long conversation as a duel in which every speaker is protecting something, and watch who is really in control.
