German (Der Himmel über Berlin)
1987 · Directed by Wim Wenders · 128 min
Two angels move unseen through Berlin in the late 1980s, listening to the private thoughts of its people and offering comfort that no one can see. The film is a slow, poetic drift through a city, closer to a meditation than a conventional story.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late high point of postwar German art cinema and one of the most admired European films of the 1980s. It showed that a metaphysical fantasy could be built from poetry, place and image rather than spectacle.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about attention: who is looking, who is listening, and what it means to really notice a place.
