American
1990 · Directed by David Lynch · 125 min
Sailor and Lula are young, wildly in love and on the road in the American South, with Lula's furious mother trying to pull them apart. David Lynch turns the lovers-on-the-run story into a loud, funny, violent and sentimental fable, driven by rock and roll.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of late-twentieth-century American auteur cinema. It shows an art-house filmmaker pushing genre material toward the grotesque and the romantic, and it came just as Lynch's style reached a wide audience through television.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a fairy tale told in a roadside-pulp voice, where the lovers' sincerity is set against a world that grows stranger and more cruel.
