Drama
Yugoslav (Otac na službenom putu)
1985 · Directed by Emir Kusturica · 136 min
Sarajevo, early 1950s. Six-year-old Malik is told that his father has gone away on business, and he tries to make sense of the adult world around him. The film follows one family through a tense, tender and sometimes comic stretch of Yugoslav history, seen largely through a child's eyes.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of late Yugoslav cinema, it showed that a story about a Balkan family could carry a major international prize while quietly examining the state's own recent past.
