Elmer Fudd, the hapless hunter, goes after Bugs Bunny once again, but this time the whole chase is staged as a grand Wagnerian opera. Seven minutes of helmets, spears, storms and sung dialogue turn a familiar rivalry into high-culture burlesque.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late golden age of American studio animation, it shows the Warner Bros. cartoon at its most formally daring and stylistically modern, just before the theatrical short began to decline.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a miniature opera in which music dictates every gesture, and the comedy comes from stylised grandeur applied to tiny stakes.
