Documentary
American
1975 · Directed by Frederick Wiseman · 167 min
Frederick Wiseman spends nearly three hours inside a New York City welfare office, watching applicants and caseworkers meet across desks and counters. There is no narrator, no interview and no music, only people trying to be heard by a system built on forms and rules.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central film in the American direct cinema tradition and in Wiseman's long series of institutional portraits, showing how documentary could build an argument entirely through observation and editing.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of how an institution speaks: the scripts, the forms and the tones people use to manage each other.
