A divorced New Jersey dockworker is left in charge of his two children for a weekend when a violent electrical storm arrives and something far stranger follows. Spielberg tells a vast catastrophe at the scale of one frightened family, in the tone of a nightmare rather than an adventure.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of 2000s blockbuster science fiction, and the third major screen version of Wells's 1898 novel, reshaped for the age of digital effects and a post-9/11 audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about a father's competence, not as an invasion film: the spectacle matters mainly for what it demands of Ray.
