In rural Devon on the eve of the First World War, a farm boy raises a spirited young horse and forms a bond with him. When war arrives, the film follows the horse and the people he meets, in an old-fashioned, emotional adventure shot on a grand scale.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late, large-scale example of classical Hollywood storytelling returning to the First World War, adapted from a children's novel and a celebrated stage play, and made by the director most associated with that tradition.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a deliberately old-fashioned fable, where light, landscape and music are used for feeling rather than realism.
