Israeli (ואלס עם באשיר)
2008 · Directed by Ari Folman · 90 min
An Israeli filmmaker realises he has almost no memory of his army service in the 1982 Lebanon war. He sets out to interview old comrades and others who were there, and the film follows his search in animated form, part documentary and part waking dream.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 2000s revival of non-fiction cinema, it showed that animation could carry testimony, subjectivity and political weight in a feature-length documentary.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a portrait of how memory works, with each interview adding a different version of the past rather than a settled fact.
