On an Earth buried in rubbish, one small robot keeps doing the job he was built for, alone except for a few odd keepsakes. Then a sleek visitor arrives and his routine is upended. Part silent comedy, part love story, part fable.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of twenty-first-century animated science fiction, it joins the silent-comedy tradition of Chaplin and Keaton to modern digital animation and a story about ecology and consumer culture.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a silent comedy in a digital body, where gesture, timing and sound do the work that speech usually does.
