Drama
French (Sans toit ni loi)
1985 · Directed by Agnès Varda · 106 min
A young woman with a rucksack and a tent walks through the French countryside in winter, taking whatever work and shelter she is offered. The film pieces her story together from the memories of the people who crossed her path, and it declines to explain her.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of 1980s European art cinema, and a bridge between the New Wave's formal freedom and the later social-realist cinema of the road and the margins.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a portrait assembled from other people's impressions, where each witness reveals as much about themselves as about Mona.
