A family heads to a coastal holiday house, carrying an old, unresolved fear from one childhood evening at a seaside fairground. When four silent figures appear at the end of their driveway one night, the weekend turns into a fight for survival. Jordan Peele mixes dread, dark comedy and allegory.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 2010s wave of auteur-driven horror, and a key example of genre cinema used for pointed social allegory, after Get Out had opened the way.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a puzzle built from images: the film is always showing more than the characters can say.
