Wyoming, 1880. A widowed pig farmer with a terrible reputation from his younger years is drawn back toward violence by a bounty and a desperate need for money. A slow, sombre Western that questions the genre's own myths.
Why it matters in cinema history
The film is a defining late statement of the revisionist Western, closing a conversation that runs from John Ford and Sergio Leone to Eastwood's own earlier genre films.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a conversation with the Western myth: every time someone tells a story about violence, ask how it compares with what is actually shown.
