Yugoslav (Подземље)
1995 · Directed by Emir Kusturica · 170 min
Belgrade, 1941. Two charming crooks, Marko and Blacky, smuggle, scheme and chase the same woman while the city is bombed around them. Emir Kusturica turns half a century of Yugoslav history into a loud, musical, tragicomic fable in which friendship, lies and survival are hard to tell apart.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of 1990s European art cinema and the best-known screen portrait of Yugoslavia's twentieth century, it closes a long tradition of state-sanctioned partisan myth by turning that myth into tragicomedy.
Watch with intention
Read it as a fable about a whole country, not a realistic history: ask what each outrageous event stands for.
